The GEANCO Community Center Comes Alive!

The ribbon cutting ceremony for The GEANCO Community Center donated by The Charles Antetokounmpo Family Foundation was a day filled with so much excitement and celebration. The primary purpose of this center is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for young boys and girls to continue their education, explore new interests, and simply enjoy being purposeful young adults.

The event began with a heartfelt opening prayer led by Reverend Pius Chukwuakom, who offered thanks for the vision that brought this facility to life. He praised the dedication of the individuals who made it possible, blessing the center as a symbol of hope for the community’s future leaders.

Following the prayer, noteworthy keynote speeches were taken from the following personalities: Mr Obinna Okoye (Country Coordinator, GEANCO Nigeria), Ms Paschaline Chukwuka (Program director, GEANCO Nigeria) and Mrs Anuli Ilechukwu (GEANCOCC Director) ably represented by Ms Adaeze Eze. With a deep sense of pride, they all spoke about the importance of creating spaces where young people can thrive—places like this center that encourage growth, learning, and personal development. Their words were followed by notable dignitaries in the community, each expressing their gratitude and support for such a valuable addition to the area. They emphasized the impact the facility would have on the lives of the youths and were grateful to have seen it happen in their lifetime.

Next, we swung into full celebration mode as lively dance performances from women and girls filled the arena. Their energy was contagious, with the audience clapping and even dancing along, their excitement growing in anticipation of the ribbon cutting itself.

Finally, the moment everyone was waiting for came: the cutting of the ribbon. Key GEANCO officials, along with the dignitaries present, gathered at the entrance of the facility, scissors in hand. With one quick snip, the ribbon fell, symbolizing the official opening of the center and the start of a new chapter for the young adults in the community. Applause and cheers filled the air as the gate swung open to reveal the beautifully designed facility inside.

Guests were invited on a guided tour of the center, which began at the administrative block and continued through the various rooms and amenities. They marveled at the fully equipped computer room, the well-organized seminar room, and the peaceful library, all designed to foster learning and personal growth. Outside, they explored the basketball court, swimming pool, mini golf course, and other outdoor games—each space carefully crafted to provide opportunities for both physical activity and fun.

As the tour came to a close, testimonials were shared, offering heartfelt accounts of the impact the facility had already made over the years. Young adults and students of Cecilia Okoye Academy spoke of the benefits the center had brought to them: (Video show)

To end the day, the students in attendance were given the chance to participate in some of the very activities the center offers. Laughter filled the air as they swam, enjoyed the trampoline, and explored the various indoor and outdoor games, reminding everyone of the center’s purpose—to be a place where young adults can learn, grow, and simply be young adults.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was a beautiful celebration of a bright future, and as the day came to a close, it was clear that this facility would be a cornerstone of the community for years to come.
