Within four months of cutting the ribbons of our first-ever Modular Clinic christened The Julia Burke Maternity Centre, we are excited to bring you happy tales about the launching of yet another modular clinic by our project team. Last week Wednesday, the 17th of March 2021, was a memorable day for the people of Obinagu Nike in Enugu State, as they witnessed the ribbon cutting of a well equipped modular clinic in their community, courtesy of The GEANCO Foundation.
As expected, the event attracted the presence of dignitaries and representatives from the Ministry of Health, Public Health, the community and of course lots of volunteers. The Honourable Commissioner of Health Enugu State, ably represented by the Reproductive Health Coordinator, Dr Christopher Okafor once again spearheaded the cutting of the ribbons, inspection and thereafter declared the clinic open for use.
The new clinic, Godwin Onyema Maternity Centre– so named after the former Director of The GEANCO Foundation- is a replica of the first both in model and structure. There is, however, an addition of a Pharmacy unit in the new clinic, a larger delivery space, wider lounge, amongst others. The beneficiary, Mrs Gertrude Ukeh, who we can now comfortably refer to as “blessed amongst women” is a well trained and seasoned Traditional Birth Attendant.
Members of Obinagu Nike in Enugu State were all smiles and filled with praise for The GEANCO Foundation for something they referred to as “first of its kind”. The women were particularly overjoyed and it was mirrored by the occasional dance and praise chants they broke into.
Our project team is most grateful to our numerous volunteers. Their presence and generous inputs and contributions made the event colourful. They ensured the women and children present were not left disappointed. There was free Family Planning and Cervical cancer screening sessions provided by Mrs Charity Ibe (RN/RM), CEO of Redeemer’s Hospital and Maternity; free HIV screening and kits distribution; a lecture on the Importance of Sanitation and free Albendazole, Vitamin A and Multiple multivitamins administration to women and children all provided by The Daniel Iroegbu Foundation.
Thus, the second GEANCO Foundation modular clinic is up and running in the Obinagu Nike community and so is our resolve to reposition and provide better healthcare services to our underserved communities.
